The City of Cedartown began demolition of a dilapidated house at 224 Thompson St. early Monday.

City Manager Charles Akridge said the city just recently obtained a court order to tear down the old house, which had long been vacant and had fallen into such a state of disrepair that it had severe structural problems.

A backhoe began knocking the house down at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, prisoners from a probation detention facility were simultaneously at work in the same block of Thompson Street, cleaning out a clogged storm sewer.

After removing the grate from the sewer drain, the cleaning crew were surprised to find a large plastic toy, apparently a crib toy for an infant. Also removed were a crumpled metal bucket and a wide assortment of paper and foam cups and fast food containers.

The city is attempting to catch up on long overdue cleaning of the storm sewer system. Crews are concentrating on the worst trouble spots first.
