Engram said much of the discarded furniture comes from rental properties. A tenant moves out, and either the tenant or property owner deposits the furniture on the city right of way for city crews to pick up.
No more.
With Monday’s resolution, “this is now a private contractor issue,” Engram said.
The landowner now has the responsibility to haul off the furniture, or to hire someone to do so.
Furniture left on the city right of way will now be considered a nuisance. The city will obtain a court order if attempts to have the property owner dispose of the “uncollectible trash” are unsuc-cessful. The property owner would then be billed by the city.
Engram said discarded furniture has been a growing problem for city trash crews. The normal equipment and crews are not set up for picking up furniture, and this has added to the city’s expense.
