A Rockmart man faces drug charges after a routine traffic stop led to the discovery of suspected methamphetamine items in his car.

According to the Polk County Jail docket book, James Van Dover, 50, of 2050 Old Cedartown Road, Rockmart was arrested Thursday afternoon. He is charged with habitual violator, operating an unregistered vehicle, no insurance, manufacturing methamphetamine, methamphetamine possession, trafficking methamphetamine and possession tools for the commission of a crime.

Rockmart police Det. David Gowens said an officer stopped Dover near Highway 278 because there wasn’t a tag on his car. Dover pulled over into the Ingle’s parking lot in Rockmart.

The officer soon realized Dover had a license violation, arrested him, and took him to the Polk County Jail.

Gowens said items used to make methamphetamine in the car, termed by police as “rolling meth,” were allegedly found when officers took an inventory of all items in the car preparing the car for towing.

The Polk County Drug Task Force was called to take the methamphetamine lab into evidence and fire and ambulance crews were called as a safety procedure. Gowens said a portion of the parking lot was sectioned off for safety reasons.

Additionally, the hazardous materials team has been called in to help with cleanup.
