A routine traffic stop for no tag ended with the discovery of a rolling methamphetamine lab in the Ingle’s parking lot in Rockmart.

Det. David Gowans with the Rockmart Police Department said one man was arrested on a license violation, but now will face drug charges. The man’s name has not yet been released.

He said a patrol officer stopped the driver of the gold Pontiac Buick in the shopping center parking lot. Gowens said he came by to assist.

The officer soon realized there the driver had a license violation, arrested him and took him to the Polk County Jail.

Gowens said that’s when things took an unexpected turn.

“We were inventorying the vehicle in order to tow,” he said. “When we found the meth lab.”

The Polk County Drug Task Force was called to take the methamphetamine lab into evidence and fire and ambulance crews were called as a safety procedure. Gowens said a portion of the parking lot was sectioned off for safety reasons.

Additionally, the hazardous materials team has been called in to help with cleanup.
