Property records in the clerk's office at the Polk County courthouse show two land tracts exchanged hands to Logistic Services Trucking Company of Ohio April 15. Land along Ohio and Prior Streets and Cedartown property along Industrial Avenue and Highway 278 were listed in deed records as the tracts sold for $150,000.
Gary Sluss with Pierre Foods, which acquired Zartic and all of its properties in 2006, confirmed the sale. He said the trucking company and its land next to Zartic was included in the sale. The full price of the buyout is not available in public records.
Eric McDonald, president of the Polk County Chamber of Commerce, said he hopes the sale will mean more jobs in the area but that remains uncertain. He said the company didn't go through the chamber to find a buyer so the chamber is not privy to details.
"The development authority has been working with them to market that (Zartic) builing and market that property. It's in the industrial area and that's ripe for development," McDonald said.
He said Pierre is currently in stripping the fixtures and equipment out of the old Zartic building.
Zartic has not been operational in over a year. Pierre Foods suffered an severe quarterly loss January, 2008, because of the Zartic acquistion, rising costs, and costs of outsourcing after the Alabama Zartic planted closed. Pierre Foods filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy July, 2008, and a company press release stated the company emerged from bankruptcy December, 2008.
