National Night Out, which provides free food, entertainment and family activities, is scheduled from 5 p.m. until Friday, July 31 at the Nathan Dean Sports Complex, Rockmart.

The Northwest Georgia Housing Authority and the City of Rockmart Police Department are sponsoring the event.

Stacey Smith, one of the planners, said this is the fourth year the event has been held in Rockmart.

“It continues to bring families out for a night of fun,” she said. “There is also free food – hot dogs, drinks and chips.”

There is no admission fee.

The Atlanta Skydiving Club, which appeared in the 2008 event, is scheduled to kick off this year’s slate of activities.

This team is a functional organization providing weapon and tactical expertise not normally available to law enforcement agencies. Their expertise is utilized in the resolution of critical incidents in an effort to reduce the risk of injury or loss of life to citizens, police officers, and suspects.

The Rockmart Fire Department will sponsor an obstacle course and plans are to have the Fire Safety House, which gives kids opportunity to take part in an educational tour about safety procedures at home.

The Rockmart Police Department will distribute material on seat belt and other safety measures for youngsters.

Redmond Emergency Medical Services will participate and Jack Henderson will donate inflatables for the children to enjoy.

Cotton candy and a bicycle safety course will be provided by Floyd Emergency Services. Other service organizations will be set up around the track.

Special attractions will be featured periodically throughout the evening, including a movie – “Hotel for Dogs”. The show begins around 8:30 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to watch the film.

Southern Thunder will provide entertainment prior to the climax at 10 p.m. when a giant fireworks display will be presented.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnership. In addition, it sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are fighting back.

“It gives officers an opportunity to interact with youth and children in a relaxed environment,” said Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells.
