Thunderstorms possible tonight

Rain so far over the past two days has been slow and steady, adding up to 1 7/10ths of an inch between 8 a.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday, according to rain gauges monitored by The Rockmart Journal.

However, stronger rains are in the forecast for later Friday.

According to the National Weather Service:

There is a slight chance of severe thunderstorms over portions of central Georgia today and tonight. Otherwise, there will be scattered thunderstorms over the remainder of north and central Georgia.

A hazardous weather warning has thus been issued. The primary hazards associated with these possible thunderstorms are strong damaging winds and large hail. Also, occasional to frequent lightning will be associated with some of these thunderstorms.

The extended forecast:

Today: Occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then occasional showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. High near 56. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 60. North wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 58. North wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 33.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 62.

Monday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 42.

Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57.

Tuesday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 48.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 28.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54.
