Mega Park concerns residents

The Development Authority of Polk County (DAPC) recently reconstituted by the Polk County Commission, has a 1,545 acre site under option.

The site, located on Antioch Road near Wooten Road, is the property of the executors of J.L. Lester. The land, which will cost the development authority about $5 million, is under option through Dec. 31.

If the development authority exercises its option on the property, the property will be used for an industrial “mega park” to attract major industrial plants. Polk County Commission Chairman Billy Croker cited the Honda transmission plant in Haralson County as the type of large development that DAPC hopes to attract.



The Honda plant in Haralson County is located on 300 acres, considerably less than the 1,545 acres DAPC plans to purchase in Antioch. Croker noted that a “mega park” is a long-term goal for the Development Authority of Polk County. He added, “These type industries generally are sizable capital investment plants offering quality employment opportunities and tax base expansion.”

The prospects of such a large land purchase and a county industrial park in Antioch has many local residents upset.
