Home Depot is now officially in Cedartown’s future, according to City Manager James Stephens.

After the new Wal-Mart Super Center opens, Home Depot will occupy the spot that is the home of the current Wal-Mart, located at 109 Davis Road. The Wal-Mart Super Center is currently scheduled to open this May.

Stephens said that the old Wal-Mart will be torn down and that Home Depot will build a new facility in its place. He explained that a portion of land behind the current Wal-Mart is being purchased for the construction. That land, about a half-acre, will have to be rezoned. The rezoning request was made on Jan. 6.

“We received an application to have a portion of land that is just behind the existing Wal-Mart building rezoned to commercial [C-2], and the purpose is for a Home Depot,” Stephens explained.

“Their store is going to sit back about 20 to 50-feet from where the front of the building is now.”

Appropriate measures call for the rezoning request to be heard twice by city commissioners before approval. With this fact in mind, the rezoning application will likely be approved at the city commission’s March meeting.

“It will have to go through the total process,” Stephens said.

The City Commission meets the second Monday of each month. Home Depot is expected to be discussed at the Planning Commission’s Jan. 30 meeting as well.

Also expected to be torn down during the construction process are several stores that are currently connected to Wal-Mart.

The strip of stores that includes Radio Shack, however, is expected to remain.

“The three units that are diagonal between Wal-Mart and Cato’s (clothing store) will be coming down,” he said.

While the Wal-Mart Super Center is not expected to open until May, Stephens said that should the old Wal-Mart be vacated sooner, Home Depot will be ready to move in - pending approval of the rezoning application.

“In anticipation of the rezoning going through, they [Home Depot] actually have a pending contract with somebody to demolish the existing facility,” said Stephens.
