An Alabama man arrested Friday has been charged with three counts of capital murder in connection with the death of Auburn University freshman Lauren Burk of Marietta.

Courtney Lockhart, 23, faces charges of capital murder, capital murder during a robbery and capital murder during an attempted rape, authorities announced during a news conference at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"We have the right individual in jail," said Tommy Dawson, assistant chief of Auburn police department. "I'm 100 percent sure of that."

Lockhart's case will be presented to a grand jury on May 5.

According to newspaper and wire reports, Lockhart is being held in the Russell County jail in Alabama. He is expected to be moved next week to the Lee County jail, where according to records he served time in 2002 for harassment.

After Lockhart's arrest, he confessed to robbing an elderly woman last week outside a Wal-Mart in Phenix City, as well as four other robberies in the area.

Burk, 18, from east Cobb County, was shot Tuesday night and later died at a hospital.

Her 2001 Honda Civic was discovered on fire in a parking lot near a dormitory about 20 minutes after the shooting was reported to police
