Some Rockmart neighborhoods were again without electricity Sunday morning due to a traffic accident.

Around 8:20 a.m. Sunday, a pickup truck driving north on Piedmont Avenue ran off the road, up on the curb and clipped a power pole supporting a major electric transmission line.

The truck continued over the sidewalk, smashing through two chain link fences before striking a private residence.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. A witness at the scene said the driver appeared to have a medical emergency of some kind.

Georgia Power crews were still at the scene at 9 a.m. Power was cut to the scene and surrounding areas as crews prepared to replace the old pole, which was snapped in half.

Businesses and some homes along Piedmont Avenue were without power, including the Handy Andy convenience store, located near the point of impact. Many homes in the Goodyear Village neighborhood of Rockmart also were left without power by the mishap.
