Cedartown police arrested a local teen Friday on charges that include armed robbery and kidnapping.
Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome identified the suspect as Frank Hawkins Jr., 17, of 939 Cleo St. Hawkins just recently turned 17 and is expected to be charged as an adult in this case.
Newsome said the Polk County 911 center received a call around 10:15 p.m. from a woman who had been shot in the leg. The woman was attempting to drive herself to a hospital, despite advice from 911 to pull over and wait for an ambulance.
Newsome said police intercepted the woman on U.S. Highway 27 north of Cedartown, as she was southbound enroute to Polk Medical Center. Police provided first aid while waiting for emergency medical technicians.
Newsome said the unidentified female, age unavailable, of Douglasville, was shot in the leg with a small caliber handgun. She was transported to Floyd Medical Center, where she was treated and released later Thursday evening.
After talking with the woman, police pieced together part of what happened but as of Friday afternoon still did not have all the details. Detective Sgt. Stan Rush worked the incident Thursday night and was still conducting interviews Friday afternoon, Newsome said.
Newsome said that at some point earlier Thursday evening, she was at a local gas station when Hawkins got into her car.
“We don’t know enough yet to say whether this woman was carjacked,” Newsome said.
What police do know, according to the victim, is that her passenger threatened her at gunpoint and forced her to drive to a local bank. She was then forced to withdraw money from her checking account through the automatic teller machine, still at gunpoint, Newsome said.
At some point during this kidnapping and armed robbery incident, Newsome said, the female was shot. Her passenger then forced her, still at gunpoint, to drive him to another location in Cedartown, where he exited the vehicle.
Based on a description and other information from the witness, an arrest warrant was issued Friday morning and Hawkins was taken into custody at a local residence.
Newsome said Hawkins was being held on charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Other charges could be added later.
Hawkins remained at the Cedartown Police Department around 1:30 p.m. Friday and was scheduled to be booked at the Polk County Jail later in the day.
Police had no photo available for publication at press time.
