A Rockmart man out on bond in a drug case is back in the Polk County Jail facing 19 new charges, according to police.

Cecil Bishop, 38, of Atlanta Highway, Rockmart, has now been charged with unauthorized distribution of a controlled substance after an investigation led to new evidence, according to Rockmart Det. David Gowens.

Gowens said all indications are that Bishop acted alone and no other arrests are expected.

Bishop was first arrested Feb. 21 after he allegedly tried to fill a fake prescription, according to Gowens. He was charged with first-degree forgery and unauthorized distribution of a controlled substance.

He bonded out Feb. 23, but police continued with their investigation.

Bishop was arrested Thursday on the new charges.

Bishop remains in the Polk County Jail.

Gowens said the new charges related to fake prescriptions, which included seven at Smith & Lockwood Pharmacy, seven at Rite Aid, and five at Walmart, all in Rockmart.

The medications obtained were primarily the painkillers Loratab and Duragesic, Gowens said.

Gowens said Duragesic is a pain patch and has become a growing problem in crime both nationally and in smaller communities like Rockmart. He said it is basically a morphine-based substance designed to be worn and to release slowly.

However, drug users are finding ways to inject and eat it. Gowens said he has seen an accidental death he believes was related to ingestion of Duragesic.
