The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) bestows the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) annually.
To be selected, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three-part Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on their grade point average.
“I was really surprised,” Rachel said. “I am excited but know there are many others who are deserving of this honor.”
Although Rachel enjoys theatre, reading, sewing and baking, her mother said her first love has always been learning.
“Rachel has never complained about attending school,” Michelle said. “We don’t need to remind her about doing her homework.”
Her sister Sarah, a freshman at RHS, said she is very proud of her sister. “She is a great role model and I am excited for her.”
Rachel, a senior, said she has always been driven to work hard. “I have never considered learning difficult,” she said. “I think it is important to my future.’
After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Georgia where she will major in journalism.
“I hope to work at a newspaper one day,” she said.
Rachel was recognized at RHS on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Chair Karen Nissen, Polk County of Chamber of Commerce, presented her a plaque.
RHS Principal DeAnna Williams and Wesley Styles, assistant principal, also recognized Rachel.
The Georgia STAR program has honored more than 23,500 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic success, according to information provided by Director Laura Bates, Member Services of the Polk County Chamber.
