Tara Payne and Rydell Palmer, chief executive officers of Compassion Building, a Polk County non-profit charity, approached city commissioners Jan. 14 seeking approval to organize a community-wide Easter Egg Hunt at Northwest Park in March and host a Fourth of July Parade this summer in downtown Cedartown.
Both events were approved unanimously by the city commission.
This would be the second Easter event that Compassion Building has organized. Payne told the commissioners during the meeting that last year’s event attracted many local residents.
“We had an egg hunt and were able to stuff hundreds of eggs with candy for the children, but we were also able to feed around 750 people as well,” Payne said. “We plan to do the same thing this year, and offer facepainting and games for anyone who wants to come out.”
The group also plans to organize a downtown Cedartown Fourth of July Parade.
According to Payne, the parade route would start at the intersection of Thompson and Main streets and end in the Wendy’s restaurant parking lot.
“We wanted to have this event for families that might not be able to travel to Rome or Cave Spring for their parades. We want to allow them to stay here, in their hometown, and enjoy a parade,” Payne said.
They also plan to host a special family oriented movie viewing at Northwest Park later that evening.
The group will be working with City Clerk Carol Crawford to secure permission through the Georgia Department of Transportation to host the parade along Main Street.
