More than 100 Rockmart residents gathered at Nathan Dean Sports Complex to pay tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Organized by Amber Garrison and members of her family, the tribute took place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.

"The idea to organize an event like this just came to me," Garrison said. "We have four children and you just never know -- something like this could have happened to one of them and I just felt like the community needed to come together for this."

As part of the ceremony, participants were given green and white balloons to release. Many residents wrote special messages addressed to the victims on the balloons. A large banner was also made available so that participants could write messages of hope and encourgagement to the victims' families.

Garrison said the banner, along with a DVD of the ceremony, would be sent to the families of the shooting victims.

Rockmart mayor Steve Miller and State Representive-elect Trey Kelley also spoke during the event.
