Police said in a statement Tuesday morning that 24-year-old Clayton County Officer Sean Callahan died of his injuries around 5:16 a.m. Tuesday.
Clayton police said in the statement that Callahan joined the department about four months ago because he wanted to do something that he loved. Police asked for prayers for his family, the police department and the Clayton County community "as we endure the loss of a fallen comrade."
The shooting happened Monday afternoon after police were called to a domestic dispute near a motel on Davidson Parkway in Stockbridge - about 20 miles southeast of Atlanta.

A rookie police officer was in critical condition after being shot twice in the head south of Atlanta, a police chief said.
Clayton County Officer Sean Callahan, 24, was in critical condition Monday night at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Clayton County Police Chief Gregory Porter told reporters.
The shooting happened Monday afternoon near a motel on Davidson Parkway in Stockbridge - about 20 miles southeast of Atlanta, authorities said.
Police had been called to a domestic dispute around 2 p.m., Porter told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Authorities tried arresting the couple, but the unidentified man broke free. Police chased the man and he fired shots at the officers. Police returned fire and killed him. The unidentified woman who was involved in the dispute was taken into custody.
Callahan has worked with the department for four months, Porter said.
Callahan is the second Clayton County police officer to be seriously injured on duty within a week.
Last Wednesday, one of two burglary suspects hit officer Michael Hooks with a truck in Jonesboro and fled the scene. Authorities arrested one suspect and are still searching for the 36-year-old man who hit Hooks with the truck.
