“They just got sucked out,” said Carol Wilson, store manager for Fast Food and Fuel in Rockmart.
Fast Food and Fuel was the only place in Polk County that sold Hostess products. Wilson said a swarm of customers bought up the goodies immediately after the company announced in November that it would be closing shop after failed union negotiations.
“It wasn’t just the Twinkies,” she said. “It was all the Hostess stuff – the Sno Balls and the Ho Hos. They came in and snagged them all.”
Hostess, founded in 1930, permanently closed three plants Nov. 12 because of a union strike. It said it would be forced to liquidate if workers didn’t return to their jobs.
The company announced on Nov. 16 that it would close all of its bakeries and liquidate. Operations at all of its bakeries were suspended and most of its 18,500 workers were laid off.
Hostess said in a statement in November that it filed a motion with U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking permission to close its business and sell assets, including 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers.
There has been some speculation about competitors buying the companies assets, including its trademarked brands, but none of those deals have materialized.
Wilson said there are no more deliveries of Hostess products coming into her store.
“That’s it. They’re gone,” she said.
However, the snacks are being sold on Ebay ranging in price from five dollars up to $500.
