The Polk County Board of Commissioners has approved a $12,000 quote from Robert Noble for architectural services.
The board will seek a bid for a construction contract at a later date.
They have indicated that the work will include enclosing the breezeway and moving walls to rearrange space needed by the police department.
Previous construction estimates of $600,000 have changed. County officials now believe the project should cost no more than $300,000 or $400,000.
Chairman Cleve Hartley has emphasized the need for use of the building to house the county police. He advocated renovation rather than spending $1.5 million for a new structure.
Commissioners have also approved replacing the sign in front of the building and fabricating new fronts, which were dismantled when Post 29 moved.
The board sought quotes and approved Fish Creek Signs and do the work at a cost of $3,200.
