Tuesday’s re-election of President Barack Obama was the final straw for two Cedartown business owners, who on Wednesday announced the pending closure of the historic West Cinema and the Pink Sugar boutique.

Jacquie Peterson and her husband, John Clark, also own three other businesses. They travel across the nation in support of Hospitality Renovations and U.S. National Construction, which will both continue operating. A fifth business, Zeepbel USA, is a manufacturer and wholesale supplier of organic bath and body products to spas, boutiques and salons. The business sells to nine states and Peterson plans to continue operations there as well.

Peterson said she anticipates higher taxes and more regulations during Obama’s second term of office. Closing the downtown Cedartown retail business and movie theater are necessary steps for the couple’s economic survival, Peterson said.

“We thank and love this community and have tried to do the right thing,” Peterson said. “But at some point you have to take care of yourself.

“We are shutting down the arteries to save the core business.”

Peterson went on to say that “elections have consequences.” While noting that Polk County is a conservative community that favored Republican Mitt Romney in the election, the simple fact is that the couple’s business has to survive in a national business climate that Peterson described as increasingly hostile to small businesses.

“The current administration’s agenda has continued to make the business environment impossible for small business entrepreneurs,” Peterson said. “We pay about 55 cents of every dollar we make to taxes. After he’s done it’ll be 65 cents of every dollar.”

Pink Sugar opened about two years ago, filling an empty building at the busy corner of Main Street and West Avenue. The boutique sells bath soaps, perfumes, clothing and accessories.

The couple bought the West Cinema last year from the Kenneth Browning family. It is currently operated by their daughter and son-in-law, Gabriella and Jeff Drake. The theater has two screens and hosts birthday parties and other events.

Peterson said the theater is up for sale. Interested parties may contact Gabriella Drake at (706) 204-6423. Meanwhile, according to the theater’s Facebook page, the theater will shut down after showing the film “Breaking Dawn Part II” on Friday, Nov. 16.

The stock, furnishings and display items at Pink Sugar will be sold next week through a going-out-of-business sale, beginning 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. The business currently has its doors locked and windows covered. Saturday, Nov. 17 will be the last day of the sale.

By the time Obama is through with the country we will be in a depression with four years. I have been supporting our local theater for years I'm so sad to see it close. Obama is just as bad as Jimmy Carter except we were blessed with Regan and not two terms with Carter.

I also run a small business here in town. This closing is an obvious "statement" on politics. It may also be a business decision but it certainly could have waited until the end of the tax year in December or come at the end of the fiscal year in June.

I don't run a "feel Good" business on Main St. and nobody patronizes me just to "support" my business. I have to provide value for people's very scarce dollars in this town while at the same time battling local government codes. It doesn't leave me with much money myself and I pretty much end up being one of the working poor myself because EVERYTHING goes back into my business.

I appreciate that they attempted to open a business on Main St. because it does need vendors and I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE how hard it is to keep a small business afloat in this town and not only do I lack support I also face opposition.

I did visit the place once. I did not find any value for my dollar there. I won't say it was overpriced it just wasn't the kind of thing I need to buy and I don't have much money for things I don't need. I also felt out of place being a very plain and sometimes even ragged person due to the nature of the work I do. They may not have meant to make me feel this way and it may have been my own self consciousness but I felt a little unwelcome there as well.

Great comments Ugak. Heres the bottom line. To every business venture, there is a profit motive. The naive will call this greed and will never have the ability to recognize the inherent risks associated with not only starting a business but maintaining a profitable one. When the risks cannot be mitigated, hard choices must be made. No doubt that John is a smart businessman who understands whats coming next year, hence the decision to close these two ventures. Unfortunately, the masses wont understand that a re-election of Santa will hit them as well, with less take home pay. A sad commentary but fools have elected a fool to run this country.

The reason obama won is because of the supporters he has. It has taken the democrats 50 years to get the "non-producer" and "the give me something for free" in numbers enough to win an election. Welfare recipients, food stamp recipients, unemployment recipients and those who pay NO INCOME TAXES should be bared from voting.

For all of you "extremely smart Obama supporters" who keep making asinine comments, here is a link. Read this article and give me your best explanation on why these companies are laying off people. Here let me whisper something in your ear....those "evil rich people" that you keep demonizing are the people that supplies the jobs! Can you name one poor person who has hired someone? Hold that thought, here's the bigger question.....what do you think those "evil rich people" do with their money, when they are going to lose it to taxes? Answer...they hold on to it! They don't spend it!!! That's why they're rich!!!! That means they don't invest it! So when that "evil rich guy" comes to hand you a pink slip, then you can go and see what that wonderful president of yours really has in store for you. Free stuff for everyone!

Its obvious you know very little. Obama didn't run in 04. I also highly doubt God has his back. His party bood God and Israel. Obama himself even said that this is no longer a Christian nation. The only thing you will see in the next 4 years is more failure and higher unemployment. Thanks to people like you this country is doomed for at least 4 more years.

Sorry these people are going out of business. Let's be realistic. They are not going out of business because President Obama was re-elected. Having an overly priced boutique in Cedartown is simply poor business planning/projection. Unfortunately, for the West Theatre premium channels such as HBO, Cinemax, etc and let us not forget DVDs allow people to watch movies in the comfort of their own homes, hence people going out to the movies has been in decline for many years(poor planning on their part). Again, sorry they're going out of business but Mitt Romney's election would not have solved their problem. Get another excuse!

Running a small or large business probably means that the owner/operator needs communication skills, both written and oral. Take a look at some of Don Marquis's writings and you'll see the similarity between the works of "Archy" and one of those leaving a message on the subject of running a business.

not a single negative comment above could have come from anyone remotely associated with starting and running a small business. and ditto for those similar statements on facebook. prices are NOT arbitrarily placed on items in any business. overhead costs, volume purchasing, gross-and-net sales, cash-flow, adhering to governement regulations, MASS-MERCHANDISER COMPETITION (Wal-Mart), other competitors (Merle Norman down the street), ALL have an effect on the ability of a small business. selling mary kay from the trunk of your car doesn't come close as a comparison (a comment from facebook). these entreprenuers should be COMMENDED for heroic efforts in doing exactly what everyone in cedartown keeps complaining about (we need new businesses in downtown, blah, blah, blah)....these people LOST money trying to bring something unique to cedartown. in your heart-of-hearts, of those of you who are being negative to these people, JUST HOW OFTEN, IF EVER, DID YOU VISIT THEIR STORE AND BUY SOMETHING? just by being a 'supporter', and to help them? thank goodness they've chosen to headquarter their other businesses here and remain as residents. they will pay city and county taxes, employee taxes, hire and pay employees who can feed their families, and CONTINUE TO SUPPORT LOCAL CHARITIES, schools, other small businesses, etc. Thank you Mr. Clark and Ms. Petersen for a valiant effort and your past, present and future contributions to polk county and the city of cedartown.

Lot of people that voted for Obama don't understand what really fixing to happen to smaller business. I should probably say more than 80% of the people don't.

Extremists like these folk are one of the reasons Republicans sometimes struggle in elections. They are using a presidential election as an excuse for what may have been poor business decisions in the first place...who knows? Extremist comments by candidates in Missouri and Indiana cost the Party two pretty sure seats in the Senate. Have you read Ted Nugent's latest comments? While they are "not from 'round here" I hate to see them and the businesses go. The improving economy might have saved them if they had held on but they made, what I'm sure, was a sound business decision based on the figures before them. I wish them good luck in future endeavors.

Items in store are cheap and over priced. Living above their means. Cedartown won't miss them. Hope Kenneth Browning gets the theatre back. The West Theatre has gone down hill since he sold it.

instead of blaming Obama, maybe they should blame their sky high prices, most people in Cedartown and Polk simply cannot afford the extravagant prices for the merchandise at Pink Sugar, after all, this is not Buckhead!! As far as the theater, there are never any crowds there because the theater is outdated with holes in the screens, the sound system is not up to par and their popcorn is always stale, the theater was dead even before Obama took office the first time. Selling bath salts is the real moneymaker for this couple, of course, the salts are not INTENDED for consumption but we all know that bath salts are fast becoming a drug of choice and a deadly one at that. Goodbye and good riddance, take your bath salts elsewhere.

cgs you are entititled to your opinion , but are you really accusing this couple of selling bath salt's for illicit gain .. you must not know these folk's if that is true !! should you be doing that then you must be using salt's or something else to have such a feeble mind . what a moron !!!!!!

This is such sad news, my family loves the West Theatre and we have out of town guest often who look forward to going there. I hope someone buys this historical site and keeps it alive.

Yeah sure you are closing because of Obama. It appears that small businesses like Ideal Bakery and FHF salon have been thriving on the same street. Even Mr. Fatty's is still open having been open under Clinton, Bush and Obama. It is sad that they are using the President as an excuse instead of saying the business failed. The store was unrealistic in a town such as Cedartown...$70-$90 perfumes and $40 t-shirts usually aren't successful in small, quaint towns with much of the population being at or almost at poverty level.
