Polk County volunteer firefighters were called to a Chastain Road residence, southeast of Rockmart, around 10:10 a.m. Friday to combat a house fire.

Neighbors watching the blaze identified the home as the residence of George Kennedy and his family, who were all away from the house when the fire erupted.

A neighbor reportedly noticed smoke rising above a tree line and walked down the road to see smoke rising from the top of the house.

First responders arrived to find flames erupting from the roof. Firefighting efforts required several departments and efforts continued through 11 a.m. There was heavy structural damage visible to the house.
