A local family wants answers regarding why Polk County Animal Control killed their dog less than a day after picking the animal up.

The Wilkes family said their dog, Ace, had escaped his fence Feb. 22 and wandered to the Dollar General store in Aragon, as he sometimes does.

Aragon police called 911 for animal control and officers came and picked up the dog.

The family said they discovered the dog missing after they got home and after animal control was closed. They called the next day and were told their dog had been euthanized.

Randy Lacey, Polk County Safety director, said the incident is being investigated internally.

Lacey was given the responsibility to head animal control, along with fire, emergency management and 911, when he took over the director’s job.

Polk County Animal Control was the subject of another internal investigation last year when a Rockmart resident complained that her dog was taken by animal control officers but never documented to be in the facility.

That dog was one of three thoroughbreds that went missing from the neighborhood that week. Animal control had placed a trap in the neighborhood during that time at the request of another homeowner.

The Polk County Police Department cleared animal control of any wrongdoing in that instance.

Please remember to avoid profanity, personal attacks and accusations against individuals in posts without documented evidence i.e. directly accusing someone of lying.

Political comments or disagreements with decisions or anything someone else says are fine.

Robbie and Kristie, please keep Polk County posted on this issue with Ace. I agree with your concern of the Polk County Animal Control and it was murder. Animal Control should LOVE animals and want to protect them. Their number one concern should be to provide those that don’t have a home with one and care for them. It truly upsets me that they kill and/or murder them as quickly as they can. You might want to post this story with photos of Ace on facebook also. You can reach a lot of animal lovers and concerned citizens through facebook. It looks as if the people of Polk County need to look at disbanding the current Animal Control officials as through the evidence you mentioned they are surly in the wrong profession. I am very sorry for your loss.......

All animals that are picked up by animal control should be held a minimum of 10 days. This gives the owner a chance to retrieve the animal. One and two day euthanizations are reprehensible. I grew up in Polk County and am shocked that this would happen. I hope the RNT will print a follow up story on this. Fence or no fence this should not have happened to this dog or family!!

I hate that this happened to the poor little dog. My dog is like a part of the family. Luckily my dog is well trained and does not go out of the house without me. If the article is correct there should have been more time allowed for the owner to claim the dog. That being said if pets were not roaming around they would not get picked up by animal control. When I see pets roaming around I will call animal control because I do not tolerate other pets damaging my property or attacking my pet when we are outside. As a pet owner it is your duty to protect your pet. They can wonder off get hit by cars or picked up by animal control. Keep them in the house or in a secured fence or on a leash.

PCAC needs to be held accountable for this. Killing the dog was totally unneccessary and unwarranted.

Polk county officials already have a bad reputation for doing the wrong thing, and enforcing some laws while ignoring others.

We don't NEED this kind of Animal Control Agency.

I do not belive officer reily or the employees at the pound. of course they all take up for each other because they are puplic servents. of course nothing is going to be done, i read that dr. huges agreed to put ace down. this will stay in my head forever because i love dogs and have my own. i am so sorry for the wilkes family for loosing a part of their family. the pound knows they made a mistake! also i am changing vets, i don`t want hughs near my dogs!

you must not have talked to the wilkes because they did not have a fence and they would not have told you they did

This is correct, we do not have a fence. Ace and Kitty stayed in the house, or in the garage, with the door lifted so they could go in and out as they needed. Ace was usually very content to stay inside, and not wander off, though, he had visited Dollar General before, on his own, after following our girls when they walked down there.

While this doesn't change the main fact of the case, that PCAC killed my loving pup in less 24 hours, without giving us the chance to come and pick him up, or even talk to them, I don't want anything else to be misrepresented.

Thanks for reporting on this and for getting the word out. I look forward to reading the full story when it is published.

Thanks!

Robbie Wilkes

There is NO excuse for what has been done to Ace! I am mad as the devil over this poor dog and the saddness his people are having to go thru. Some needs to make amends to this family, i know I would go to jail if it were my dog.
