This program, which went into effect July 21, helps consumers save money on their prescription medications if not covered by insurance. The cards are free and may be used at any participating pharmacy.
There is no cost to the county, county taxpayers, or consumers to participate in the program.
Manager Clinton Lester, who presented information to the Polk County Board of Commissioners, said the discount card is not insurance and that savings average about 20 percent.
He emphasized the program is only for people who do not have prescription drug coverage.
According to information provided by Lester, all county residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage, may use the card. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on the frequency of use.
More than 59,000 pharmacies nationwide accept the card, including Wal-Mart and independents.
The program is administered by Caremax Rx, Inc., a leading pharmaceutical services company that negotiates with pharmacies to offer a discount off the retail price.
