She was born July 29, 1929.
Mrs. Sorrells taught in Polk County schools for over 40 years and loved teaching children. She spent her last years as an educator at Cherokee Elementary School; however, she also taught at Fish Creek Elementary, Aragon Elementary, Benedict Elementary and Westside Elementary. Mrs. Sorrells also taught adult education in Polk County for several years.
She was a sales associate for World Book Encyclopedias for several years.
Mrs. Sorrells graduated from Rockmart High School and was one of two women recognized for her athletic ability by being chosen in the first Sports Hall of Fame for R.H.S., having played basketball there.
She was a member of Second Baptist Church for over fifty years where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School until 2010.
Mrs. Sorrells was preceded in death by her husband, H. Hoover Sorrells Sr.; her parents Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Upton;brothers, Bill Upton, J.O. Upton, Cecil Upton, Russell Upton and Robert Upton and her sisters Lucille Hudson, and Odessa Moss.
She is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Redden of Statesboro, Ga. and Nadine Castillo of Houston, Texas and one son, Herbert H. Sorrells Jr.; her sister, Irene Franklin; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday July 6, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the Second Baptist Church with Rev. Patrick Latham officating, Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Upton, Bobby Upton, Russ Upton, Will Redden, Tyler Bowman and Jonah Vandersypen.
Honorary pallbearers were Ladies 1 Sunday School Class , Senator Nathan Dean, Mickey Upton, David Upton, Mark Upton, Charlie Franklin, Barry Franklin, Greg Winters, Mark Winters, David Winters and Wiggie Sorrells.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions can be made to the Second Baptist Church, 152 Evergreen Lane, Cedartown, GA 30125.
