Three games into the regular season, both the young Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are 2-2 on the season.
In the season openers on Nov. 29 against Pepperell, the Lady Bulldogs won 28-17.
“Pepperell was our first game and I believe we played very well,” girls head coach Ashley Davis said. “Many of the girls were nervous but as soon as the game started, it seemed like all of that disappeared.”
In the second contest of the year the Cedartown teams played Darlington. The Lady Bulldogs lost that game 32-16.
“The game was a lot closer than the score tells,” Davis said of the Lady Bulldogs. “During this game we had to play the second and third quarters without two of our starters because they had both collected four fouls in the first quarter.”
Davis mentioned the play of the bench in that game.
“Our subs really held us in that game,” Davis said. “They only allowed Darlington to score one point in the third quarter. By the fourth quarter, the game was out of our control and all Darlington had to do was run the clock out and that’s just what they did.”
Davis stated that missed chances offensively hurt the Lady Bulldogs.
“We missed a lot of opportunities to score points under the goal and missing 10 free throws did not help either,” Davis noted.
In the third game, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Coosa 39-26.
“Our girls came out ready to play,” Davis said. “We outscored Coosa 14-4 in the first quarter. After that we never looked back.”
Davis noted that Tia Covington scored 17 points nad Ava Tillmann had 13 in that game.
“We are led by a fantastic group of eighth graders,” Davis said. “We have nine eighth graders this year. Defensively we are led by Shana Abram, Keely Smith and Victoria Frazier. Offensively, Covington, Tillmann and Abram lead us by scoring a total of 36, 21, and 13 points repesctively this season.”
Against Armuchee last Thursday, the Lady Bulldogs fell 42-19.
Cedartown fell behind 23-5 at halftime and was unable to overcome that deficit in the second half.
“Armuchee had a really good defense that frustrated us from the beginning,” Davis said. “They had two or three really good post players who they would get the ball to offensively and it seemed like they couldn’t miss.”
Tillmann led Cedartown with 15 points, and sixth grader Jameia Diamond also earned praises from her coach.
“She played very well in the fourth quarter,” Davis said.
Members of the Lady Bulldogs squad this year are Shana Abram, Ally Barnett, Blair Bedford, Tia Covington, Jameia Diamond, Deazjah Frazier, Keiyana McCombs, Ava Tillmann, Tamera Beeman, Kinsley Beck, Kaylon Brown, Victoria Frazier, Keely Smith, Kaley Parker and Destiny Ragland.
Davis is the head coach and she is assisted by Natoshia Hooper and Darby Ledbetter.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have defeated Pepperell and Coosa this season, but fell to Darlington.
Cedartown beat the Pepperell boys 42-31, but then fell to Darlington 29-21. The Bulldogs got back in the win column against Coosa by the score of 31-17, but lost last Thursday to Armuchee 51-23.
Members of the Bulldogs this season are Walker Barrow, Stan Ellis, Naquavious Diamond, Jack Haney, Nick Huddleston, Jhett Lewis, Keyshaun Kent, Tyrone Martin, Robbie Matthews, Miles Minge, Payton Morrow, Quan Neal, Kamari Sullivan, Steven Walker and Trevon Wofford.
Members on the sixth grade squad are Zahquin Frazier, Timyus Stubbs, Tyler Abrams, Tony Mathis and Elijah Pace.
Terry Morrow is the head coach of the Bulldogs this winter and Bill Ellis is the assistant.
On Saturday, Cedartown will host Rockmart. The Lady Bulldogs will tip-off at 10 a.m. and the Bulldogs will play immediately afterwards.
